The Science of Sound: Helping Homeowners Understanding Speaker Quality

Chip Tollefson • January 25, 2023

If you've been researching speakers, you are probably getting frustrated with all the options and price variations. You might be asking, "what's the real value of my speaker if I spend more? And, when am I paying for brand name vs the quality of the speaker?"

Let's face it, shopping for speakers can often lead to spending a significant amount of money, only to be disappointed by the sound quality they receive.

To make good decisions you want to know your brands, know the tech, and know the sound quality you want from your speakers.

Here are a few things to think about as you start researching the right speakers for you.

Does A Higher Price Tag Mean Louder Speakers?

One of the most common comments we hear is: " I don't need expensive speakers, I'm not an audiophile" or "I don't crank it up really loud". But, when you shop for new or replacement speakers, price is directly proportional to quality. Better speakers (brands along with higher level speakers within the same brand) equal better build quality and more importantly, sound quality.

Better speakers have more material in the overall framework and grilles, much stiffer speaker baskets, larger and heavier magnets, better drivers (the actual speaker), and enclosed electronics. In a nutshell, all of these factors dictate the longevity and overall sound quality of the speakers.

What Am I Buying When I Spend More Money On A Speaker?

Lower-quality drivers can't play as low or as high, leaving the listener missing the entire range of music. Imagine hearing your favorite concert or performer through an old AM radio, you'll get the picture. Lower-quality speakers also can't handle the required power to play at the necessary volume levels required, especially outdoors.

Enclosed electronics prevent construction debris, wire clippings, and insulation from falling into the electronics, causing shorts and harmonic vibrations or rattling.

Speakers can last a lifetime, and will likely get frequent use, so spend a little more and get a better experience!
